Les Petits traités d'histoire naturelle ou Parva naturalia d'Aristote proposent, pour la première fois dans l'histoire de la philosophie occidentale, une analyse systématique des états « communs à l'âme et au corps » : la sensation, la mémoire, le sommeil et les rêves, la respiration ou encore la vie et la mort. Désormais la physiologie trouve une place nécessaire et parfaitement légitime dans le cadre de l'enquête psychologique. Appliquant les grands principes formulés dans le traité De l'âme, les Parva naturalia établissent un lien nouveau, avec une précision encore inégalée dans le corpus philosophique, entre la traditionnelle et vénérable conception de l'âme comme principe de mouvement et de connaissance, et celle qui naît avec la science du vivant, cette partie de la philosophie naturelle que développe le Stagirite. Héritage considérable, aussitôt perçu comme tel dans l'Antiquité et au Moyen Âge. Les lectures, commentaires, traductions et paraphrases d'Aristote témoignent d'une attention constante à ces textes et aux questions qu'ils posent, ouvrant dès lors la philosophie naturelle à de nouveaux domaines comme la médecine, la cosmologie, l'anthropologie, etc. Avec ou contre Aristote, on doit lire et commenter les Parva naturalia. Ce volume examine leur réception et leur fortune, dans la longue durée, et dévoile ainsi un aspect essentiel de l'histoire des rapports de l'âme et du corps.

Among all the Commentaries on the ‘Nichomachean Ethics’ by Aristotle, the Jesuit Coimbra Commentary (16th Century), written by Manuel de Góis, as a part of the widely known Jesuit Coimbra Commentaries (1592-1606), has its particularities. It is not a full-scale treatment of the Aristotelian title but its nine disputations form a brief compendium in which it is possible to see the relevance of Thomas Aquinas's Summa theologiae. As happened with the other Coimbra titles, the Ethica soon spread throughout European Universities and Colleges, and arrived in South American territories and China. The present volume, the second tome of the series that the IUC is presently publishing, introduces the Coimbra text and provides a modern edition of the original Latin with a Portuguese translation.

Long description: Das Buch untersucht das interdependente Verhältnis von Sein und Sprache im Rekurs auf die aristotelischen Schriften Metaphysik, De Interpretatione und Topik. Entsprechend liefert es einen Beitrag zur ontologischen Forschung. Sein und Sprache machen die vom Menschen wahrnehmbare Wirklichkeit aus - als zwei Seiten einer Medaille. Die Frage nach dem Sein ist immer zugleich auch diejenige nach der Sprache. Über die bedeutsame Sprache wird der erkennende Zugang zum Sein möglich, das Sein wird in der Sprache offenbar. Die aristotelische Philosophie versteht sich in der Konsequenz als Erste Wissenschaft und vertritt einen übergreifenden Anspruch: grundsätzlich, im Rahmen der Frage nach der Sprache und dem Sein, kann ihr alles thematisch werden. Implizit wird damit nach nichts Geringerem als der Möglichkeit von Sprache, Kommunikation und Erkenntnis gefragt. Umgekehrt bedürfen Sprache und Erkenntnis der Referenz auf das Wirkliche, um bedeutsam und sinnerfüllt zu sein. Unter der Prämisse dieser doppelten Perspektive kann die aristotelische Philosophie ihren primärwissenschaftlichen Anspruch behaupten. Fundament der grundlegenden Wechselseitigkeit ist das to ti en einai, das wohl mit Recht als einer der wichtigsten Kernbegriffe der aristotelischen Philosophie bezeichnet werden kann.

Between 1592 and 1606, four Jesuit professors from the College of Coimbra published a course of Aristotelian Philosophy, known by the title Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis Societatis Jesu. Given its intrinsic value, he eventually knew a global influence: from the Atlantic to the Urals, the Far East and Latin America. Also some eminent philosophers (e.g. Descartes or Peirce) were readers of the work of Coimbra but, due to the numerous editions that the work met abroad, its overwhelming presence in the European university libraries, has determined the study of philosophy by thousands of students. Written in an accessible language, this monograph aims to give an updated, systematic and rigorous perspective of the main themes addressed in the work Coimbra – logic, physics, psychology, ethics and metaphysics – for the first time presented as an exposition of philosophical science in a systematic, deductive and disputational form.

The Greek commentary tradition devoted to explicating Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (NE) was extensive. It began in antiquity with Aspasius and reached a point of immense sophistication in the twelfth century with the commentaries of Eustratius of Nicaea and Michael of Ephesus, which primarily served educational purposes. The use of Aristotle’s ethics in the classroom continued into the late Byzantine period, but until recently scholastic use of the NE was known mostly through George Pachymeres’ epitome of the NE (Book 11 of his Philosophia). This volume radically changes the landscape by providing the editio princeps of the last surviving exegetical commentary on the NE stricto sensu, also penned by Pachymeres. This represents a new witness to the importance of Aristotelian studies in the cultural revival of late Byzantium. The editio princeps is accompanied by an English translation and a thorough introduction, which offers an informed reading of the commentary’s genre and layout, relationship to its sources, exegetical strategies, and philosophical originality. This book also includes the edition of diagrams and scholia accompanying Pachymeres’ exegesis, whose paratextual function is key to a full understanding of the work.
